Face clearly visible and forward-facing
A straight-on or near-straight-on shot with the full face clearly visible gives the model the clearest possible facial data to preserve — extreme angles or partial occlusion (sunglasses, hats, hands near the face) reduce accuracy.
Even, natural lighting
Soft, even lighting (natural daylight is often ideal) avoids harsh shadows that can obscure facial detail or confuse the model's read on skin tone and features — direct overhead light or strong backlighting tends to produce less accurate results.
Reasonably high resolution and focus
A sharp, in-focus, reasonably high-resolution photo gives the model more detail to work with than a blurry, low-resolution, or heavily compressed one — this matters more than most people initially assume.
